Purpose of Position:
Dispatchers are responsible for receiving, recording and dispatching emergency calls, non-emergency calls and dispatching information to the appropriate emergency public safety personnel. Duties are performed in an emergency dispatch center environment which is fast paced and often very stressful. Dispatchers must provide excellent customer service to the public while exercising considerable tact and firmness in obtaining information from distressed persons. Some of the responsibilities are listed below but the list is not limited to only these functions.
Essential Job Functions:
Receives and monitors emergency calls, gathering maximum essential information in a minimum amount of time, determining appropriate response and dispatching emergency personnel according to standard operating procedures. Provides emergency medical instructions to callers as needed prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.
Receives non-emergency calls, determining the nature of the call, responding to inquiries, routing caller to appropriate person and/or takes messages.
Obtain pertinent information from incoming calls in a prompt and courteous manner.
Dispatch the appropriate resources such as
police, fire, EMS, EMA and/or other emergency personnel as appropriate. Coordinate mutual aid when required.
Monitors radio frequency activities of various law enforcement, fire departments and other public safety agencies within the surrounding counties. Notifies and/or dispatches local emergency personnel as situations demand.
Regularly communicates with field units, assessing unit safety and need for backup, dispatching backup units and other emergency personnel as necessary.
Verifies and enters IDACS/NCIC information on computer, including wanted, missing persons, stolen vehicles, stolen articles, etc. Ensures appropriate supporting documentation is on file according to IDACS/NCIC requirements.Receives and transmits computer messages pertaining to but not limited to, criminal history, driver’s license, vehicle registration, gun permits, runaways, missing and wanted persons and stolen property.
Maintains complete and accurate computerize
d log of all radio traffic calls, citizen requests, complaints and follow ups. Enters, updates, logs, types various reports, forms and documents on computer as required such as CAD, IDACS/NCIC, Accident Logs, etc.
Updates protection orders in Incite.
Classify and prioritize calls to establish and coordinate the proper public safety response.
Ability to operate/maintain telephones, radios and computers simultaneously in a stressful environment.
Periodically performs light janitorial duties in a secured dispatch center as needed or as assigned, such as vacuuming, dusting equipment, taking out the trash, etc.
